‘Hollywood in Space’ host Mike Paul Hughes awarded Orion Program Manager’s Commendation

Mike Paul Hughes Orion Program Manager
In a post on the Hollywood in Space Facebook page yesterday, Mike Paul Hughes announced he has been awarded the NASA Orion MPCV Program Manager’s Commendation for his contribution to the first integrated forward bay cover tent on the 10th engineering development unit airdrop cluster development test of the capsule parachute assembly system. The award was presented by Mark Geyer, Orion/MPCV Program Manager.

Congratulations, Mike!

Mike Paul Hughes will join fellow co-hosts of Hollywood in Space Aline Zimmer and Steve Lee at the red carpet premiere of the Hollywood in Space sizzle reel on February 26 in Los Angeles. A limited number of tickets are still available.

‘The Martian’ Film Script Goes Into Space On Orion!

In the latest example of how Hollywood and #NASA are forever intertwined, a page from “The Martian” movie script actually made it into space aboard the recent ‘Orion’ test launch that ‘Hollywood In Space’ host Mike Paul Hughes attended at the Kennedy Space Center!

The Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle completed a 4-hour test flight on December 5. While the capsule included other personal objects (a common tradition for space missions), executive producer Aditya Sood was thrilled ‘The Martian’ could be represented in a journey beyond Earth. The page includes a drawing doodled by the film’s director Ridley Scott of an image of Matt Daman’s character standing on the surface of Mars.

“NASA really rolled out the red carpet for us. In the capsule they had some personal objects that were important to people involved in the Orion project and one of the things was Ridley’s drawing on the cover page of ‘The Martian’ script. This is a movie about people who are really passionate about science and space-travel, so that was a really great moment for us.”

‘The Martian’ is based on Andy Weir’s self-published novel that became a huge hit in 2012. The movie stars Damon as Mark Watney along with Jessica Chastain, Kate Mara, Sebastian Stan, Sean Bean, Michael Peña, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Here’s an official synopsis:

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he’s sure he’ll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won’t have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old “human error” are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn’t ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?
